You can now follow Teachers – on WiZiQ

WiZiQ just rolled out a new feature. Students can now follow teachers on the platform to keep themselves updated on their activities.

The new feature also aims on getting more leads or, in other words, more paying students for the teachers.

Basically you can say that when a student decides to follow a teacher he/she signs up for a little news feed that will keep him/her up to date about the activities of this teacher that might be relevant.

Those activities include:

  • scheduling a public class
  • creating a public test
  • uploading a public tutorial

The theory behind this is the more public activities you are offering as a teacher, the more people will start following you and hence the higher your chances will be to convert students to paid clients.

I think this feature might indeed have some potential as this is the way I am using Twitter. I am following people who I find interesting or who I know for posting interesting content. Twitter keeps me up to date on their activity. If I put myself in the position of a student on WiZiQ who is interested in learning about a certain topic this feature can be very helpful to get reminders of what new content is available on the platform.

The new follow feature also works together with the recently launched LearnerConnect feature. Teachers now can contact students who are following them via this tool directly.

As this feature is very new I cannot comment fully on its utility. It does seem to fill a big gap in the community portal. Prior to this feature one had to make a permanent relationship (connect) with a given teacher. Then the teacher would have to decide which students to send class invitations to.

Unfortunately this created a lot of unwanted class invites from teachers I simply wanted to monitor. This also tended to overwhelm casual students with class offerings. This passive form of following will be greatly appreciated by the casual student.

The only problem I have noted thus far is that a new student does not know which way is best to start the relationship (e.g. follow or connect). Hopefully WIZIQ will make the differentiation more intuitive in the future.

I think you already explained it quite well. Following / monitoring someone is the first step. If I like what I see I might want to get a step further and actually connect with this person.

It seems to solve some problems of being too close right from the beginning.
