The Magic Whiteboard

No, this is not another virtual classroom software. So it  is not education 2.0, you might say. Well, not on the first look but I found this product on an education 2.0 website I am currently reviewing for this blog, languagesoutthere.com. It immediately got my attention and I want to share this with you because I think most of us online teachers still have offline clients and there are new and interesting synergies between on- and offline.

First of all: what is the Magic Whiteboard?
It is a whiteboard that you roll off like aluminium foil. But then it gets really cool. It is electrostatic and can be placed without glue strips or pins on any flat surface, a wall, glass, wall paper etc. And because it is electrostatic it even holds sheets of paper without using glue strips or pins. The surface itself works like a classic whiteboard. You can write on it with a those special whiteboard pens and later whipe it all off. You can even reuse the whole whiteboard several times and there are 25 on each roll!

So what makes this whiteboard 2.0?
As I said, I found this product on languagesoutthere.com a great website for language teachers providing you with lesson plans for a truly unique and revolutionary way of teaching and learning languages. More about that in another blog post.
Jason West, the founder of languagesoutthere.com shows teachers how to start an own English teaching business for around 100 Euro including the Languages Out There lesson plans, a membership on meetup.com (another interesting site I will write about) and the use of free language exchange communities like Babbel, Busuu, Livemocha or language teaching platforms like eduFire, Myngle or WiZiQ.

So with the Magic Whiteboard you are able to take your online scheduled and organized classes back into the real world. Just schedule and event and then you can meet everywhere. On the meeting you will have your whiteboard with you. Just put it on a wall, a window, wherever you want. And on the other way you can provide your offline students with online exercises, of course. So your business will take place in both worlds.

There is also a Magic Blackboard available.

Jason will tell you more about his concept and the lesson plans at the E-Teachers Academy. So be sure to enroll to meet him and ask him all the questions you have.

And last but not least, the guys of Magic Whiteboard got a pitch of £100.000 at the BBC series “The Dragons Den” last year. Here is the video:

I found these quite a bit cheaper at: http://www.magicflipchart.co.uk

I am disappointed with the product. Just sent an email to company to explain my disappointment.

I bought the gridded version and unfortunately I was not happy with the quality. When wiping off after use, the grids came off too and after wiping there were still marks left, which did not come off easily.

I do not know the quality of the normal whiteboard paper and the blackboard version; maybe these are a bit better.

I hoped to use the whiteboard at a school, but now would not recommend it to teachers, because the gridded version is not really suitable for re-using it after one lesson.
  • Really sorry to hear that. I did not use it yet, because I am teaching online most of the time.
