review:ed Episode #2 with Shiv Rajendran

Plans have changed a bit, as you might have noticed. review:ed will be a bi-monthly show. One reason is my overflooding schedule of things I need to get done in 2010, the other reason is that this way we really have the chance of getting some really interesting topics to talk about, even if there might be two weaker weeks in education related news.

My guest on the second show was Shiv Rajendran, Director of LanguageLab.com.

Mingleverse launches Facebook Application

Mingleverse, the mix between Skype, a webmeeting and Second Life just launched a Facebook application. As you might remember, I was quite surprised by the audio quality even at the beginning back in November 2009.

Since then Mingleverse have steadily worked on new features and the quality of their product and now they are taking on the social network number one and as Mashable reported yesterday Facebook is responsible for 41 percent of all social media traffic. So, that’s likely to be a move that’ll pay off for Mingleverse in the future.

Twitter Whoring – as seen on MySpace

Remember MySpace?

Sorry, I could not resist ;) . Fact is that MySpace still get millions of uniques every month and I won’t declare them dead yet, but this is another story. What is important about this first big social network is a certain kind of behaviour born around 2003/2005 that spread from MySpace to all other social media sites which came after it: whoring.

I think this background is very important so I want to share this with you before I will go to the different possible ways to use Twitter for online education companies and online teachers. So please bear with me :) .

busuu.com now connects to facebook

Astonishingly there are not so many educational companies which have yet implemented facebook  in their overall strategy. According to Mashable the social network is adding 500.000 new users each day and has today about 325 million members. So it seems like a good plan to get yourself represented on facebook, right?

Of course, most of the companies already have fanpages, Myngle even has its own application. But none of them really implemented their product in the facebook community.

busuu.com now seems to make a first step.

The biggest Language Learning Community in the World is…

Facebook.

At least it could (will) be. This week news about Facebook were rushing in.

1. Facebook has now 300.000.000 users

2. Facebook is finally in the positive cash flow

3. Facebook will offer a Voicechat by Vivox

Point two is not that interesting for the regular user. Ok, it is good to know that Facebook is a sustainable business. Rumors even say that there are plans to bring Facebook to Wallstreet in the second half of 2010. We’ll see.

But if you take together point one and point three it should make you think. The potential is just mindblowing!

Think about it.
