It seems as if my dream of a pocket teaching device is getting closer. Skype, my weapon of choice for online teaching, confirmed that they would be open working together with Apple to bring great video calling to as many people as possible.
Be still my heart.
The question that remains of course is what Apple is actually planning to do with FaceTime. According to the CNET article linked below Apple FaceTime is stated as an open platform. Hence providers like Skype or other VoIP services should be allowed to build their applications on top of it.
If Apple was planning to establish FaceTime as a replacement for Skype and the other providers by offering compatible applications for Windows for example I would need to “force” my students to switch to FaceTime for their lessons. Feasible but of course not the best solution.
Well, still 13 days to go for the launch of the iPhone 4 in France and I am not such a fangirl that I would need to stand in line in front of the shop although I don’t think that many people in the region I live in here in France ever heard of the iPhone 4.
