They are not simple, that's the problem .

1. By caring and adding value.
2. Same as above.
3. For companies only customer relation but with a twist also advertising.
4. The number of followers is not important.
5. Two words: Real Time.

If done right I think it is worth the effort. The thing is that Twitter is far more complex than it seems.

Kirsten,

I do not use twitter so my questions may seem rather simple.
1. How can twitter be used to acquire customers?
2. How can twitter be used to retain customers?
3. Would you call twitter a form of advertising or a form of customer relations?
4. How much time/effort does it take for a business to handle 1,000 followers?
5. What is it that twitter can uniquely do that a company can't do with e-mails and a blog (for customer relations) and targeted advertising (for advertising)?

My question, as a person totally unfamiliar with Twitter, is; is it worth the effort? Maybe what we are seeing is a general recognition from language companies that Twitter is not worth the effort.
