Hi Kirsten,
Thanks for writing about us. We are pretty excited about how this can evolve. Only one small correction -- I'm not the CEO (Yongyue Jiang, my co-founder is CEO). Looking forward to hearing more from you at the E Teachers Conference!
Kevin

If you sign up as a teacher on italki you can offer your teaching for money. This started in march 2009.

You set up your price at an hourly rate converted in italki credits ($1 = 10 ITC). There is the possibility to offer single lessons or courses that would take several lessons.

When italki started back in 2007 they were build upon the content of the community. Members would upload resources etc. And then there was the possibility to do language exchange withthe other members, of course. All this was free.

If you read the older posts on this blog you will see that this is a common method these days. The communities start with free content and when they attracted enough users they offer additional paid or premium content.
