The problem is that you never know where you might end one day and hence who is searching your dirty underwear. Just look at the presidential elections and what nonesense they dig up all the time. Twenty years from now this is going to be huge...

But this is also a great business opportunity.

Yes, now that you mentioned it - I remember this eraser idea. But I don't think that the problem is fixed when you upload pictures to your own website. As I said, sites get scraped for content all the time.

Files with inbuilt remote controlled self destruction could be a solution. A startup we had on TWiST Paris - doctracr - did something like this for pdf documents.

yes, it's true. Reading your article I remembered Maiziere's "digital eraser" (<a href="http://www.dw.de/dw/article/0,,5721309,00.html" rel="nofollow">link</a>) and recent EU legislation regarding the "deletion on demand". While on the one hand many people warn of these rules being abused as tools of censorship there is the fact of today's Facebook generation being haunted by embarassing party photos that just won't go away, even 20 years from now! A tattoo you carry on your own skin and always know where it is at least but these photos live their own life, wandering around the net, duplicating themselves and haunting their subjects for years to come. On the other hand, though, I would also argue that the majority of information on the net is highly transient and tends to get swallowed by the mass. Maybe we should teach our children the difference between posting photos on Facebook and uploading them onto their own homepage?

Hey there. I left Myngle behind in early 2009 already. This post here dates from early 2011 so I am not exactly sure what the state of affairs is right now on the various marketplaces out there. The only things I hear in emails from time to time is about late payments, no answers from the staff etc (not only Myngle, others mentioned in the post as well).

To your question, yes, I would have left Myngle even if I was not working on something else. Back then I just started to blog but still was teaching online full time - on other platforms as well as over my own offers.

Those marketplaces never attracted students but this is the only thing that would justify to pay them a fee or commission. And looking at the success of other business models in language teaching that started in the same time frame it is clear that live teaching via the Internet is just not popular enough to make a business out of it.

So, why are you and your "fellow Myngle refugees" Myngle refugees at all? Would you be if you, and they, were not interested in your own start up(s)? As a teacher looking for a virtual home, they certainly seem a reliable place to join. One thing I've notice is that normal people have not heard of them, as evidenced by those viewing my teaching resume. If student aren't there, no one's making bacon.
