Chat on Twitter about Language Learning with Rosetta Stone #RSchat

Just before I was taping my EDUKWEST interview with Thomas Whitby, Co-Initiator of the famous #edchat on Twitter today, I learned that Rosetta Stone is planning to host a Twitter chat about language learning, called #RSchat.

The first one is scheduled this coming Friday at 1PM EST.

Rosetta Stone seems to be on a Social Media offensive these days. First we had the launch of their Customer Care Center on Facebook, now the company plans to host a Twitter chat.

Now, as I said in my previous post on their new Facebook strategy: it seems to make sense. If you use the Twitter search and look for Rosetta Stone you will find quite a lot of messages about Rosetta Stone so yes, people on Twitter are talking about the product. Hence taking the next step and trying to talk with the audience, connecting them etc seems to be an obvious thing to do.

And I think there are some key information that has still not arrived in the minds of most potential users and even people who use the product at the moment. When talking about Rosetta Stone most of them are still thinking of the CD courses, not TOTALe or Rosetta World.

But this is crucial when it comes to comparisons between Rosetta Stone and Livemocha, of course. A couple of days ago Livemocha retweeted a review of Livemocha and Rosetta Stone. The author obviously used the Rosetta Stone software but had no idea of TOTALe and / or Rosetta World. And in a comparison of the classic course to Livemocha it is clear that Livemocha has to win by far because of all the social features and the pricing.

I simply don’t understand why Rosetta Stone is not pushing their new flagship product more aggressively as it even has a feature that the competitors like Livemocha, Babbel or Busuu don’t have at the moment: live lessons with a tutor. The product is out for over six months and still basically no one who writes a review mentions it when comparing Rosetta Stone to other products or services.

Maybe the new Social Media strategy aims at changing this. Time will tell.
