The Purpose of Things

I think we can all agree on this definition:

Everything that is invented, build, manufactured is made with a certain purpose in mind. If this thing does not serve the purpose it is broken.

A car is made to bring you from A to B. If the car does not serve this purpose anymore, it is broken.
A toaster is made to toast bread. If it does not toast bread anymore, it is broken.

And I think we can all agree on this second definition:

If something is broken and does not serve its purpose anymore, it is useless.

WiZiQ’s New Learning Request System

Yesterday I attended a class of Vikrama Dhiman about the new Learning Request System from WiZiQ, so basically about how to find students on this platform.

Although the audio was not very good I think I understood the idea ;) .

And did you notice: they changed the new logo back to the old color scheme. Well done!

The Evolution of Teaching

When I am browsing the forums of education platforms I come across one idea between online teachers from time to time. It has something to do with evolution. Basically they say that online teaching has to be radically different from what we teachers did up to now. No more text books. Everything must be interactive and online.

But if we take a closer look on the evolution of mankind and compare it to the evolution of teaching we will see something different.

Sparrows vs Falcons

No, I did not change the topic of this blog from online education to ornithology. This is more like one of these psychological tests in women’s magazines “Which animal are you?”.

Teacher Rockstars Part 1/3 – The Early Years

Since my presentation on the eduConference of eduFire.com about “Turning Teachers into Rockstars” I have been thinking about this picture. The more I thought about it, the more I found out that this is indeed a very good picture of what an online teaching carreer might look like.

So I decided to make a “documentary” about this. It will consist of three parts and we will follow a teacher Rockstar and his music making brother on their way to the top.

First Episode: The Early Years

Converting Offline Students to Online Students

Shall you convert your offline students to online students? What are the advantages? What are the disadvantages?

I came across this question in a community forum of an online teaching platform. The biggest problem of those platforms seems to be: How to get paying students. Interesting enough most of these platforms have no solution to this problem when asked by their teachers. Au contraire, they ask their teachers how they think to get students on the platform.

And the most discussed issue is: why don’t you simply convert your offline students into online students by bringing them to our platform?

So, here are my thoughts on this.

You have a student who wants to learn English with you. Normally, you would go to your car, drive through the town, get into traffic jams, arrive too late, spent money on fuel, loose time on the way…

Now imagine this. You have a student who wants to learn English with you. You get yourself a fresh coffee, go to your PC, login to the virtual classroom, call your student via Skype and you start your lesson.

Wouldn’t it be great?… But why would?… It IS great! Continue reading
